The Oath

Clerk in the local drugstore
my first real job
privy to all the town’s secrets
but sworn not to tell.

I know who is on the Pill
and who should have been
which teacher is schizophrenic
the old bachelors who buy Penthouse
whose kids are shoplifters
the teen heartthrob with crabs.

I’ve bitten my tongue so often
it looks like ground beef.
Secrets I’ve swallowed
give me terrible indigestion.
Luckily I have access
to shelves of remedies
and a deep employee discount.
