Musing Malaysia

We recently asked poets to craft for us a poem (minimum 20 lines) without using the letter e. Why? That’s a good question that we’re not prepared to answer. There were so many poets with nothing better to do than craft fantastic e-less contest entries, but we have to give special kudos to our runner-up, Joanne Underwood, who wrote us a collection of “Musings on Malaysia.”

Palm oil plantations from air mirror thousands of off-colour hairy tarantulas
crouching in rust dirt
This month F1 racing cars slosh through daily noon rain
timing lousy to satisfy TV fans abroad
Air cons crank out cool making down comfort a must at night
so odd in tropics
Drinks from global multinationals not my cup of chai
opt for local Boh brand with “oomph”
I can buy lots of local stuff and imports too
organic food coming from Australia U.S. Mongolia
but not from Malaysia
Unfamiliar odd-tasting fruit old TV programs abound
durian jackfruit rambutans
Dr. No Lucy Mary Poppins
Bumiputra policy only slightly blatant racist
against non-dominant folks
Walking on walkway shards is hazardous not smooth
with no good handicap ramps just high curbs
Think lovingly of Canada
But wait
Oh right
No snow no cold
Happy happy
